About CCENT
The Center for Convergence and Emerging Network Tecnologies (CCENT) was born as the merger between the Center for Emerging Network Technologies (CENT) and the Convergence Center of Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies. The merger took place in 2009.
The Center for Emerging Network Technologies was established primarily to provide leading industry insight and analysis for emerging information technologies within the IT enterprise. The center also focused part of its activities on enhancing the educational experience of iSchool undergraduate and graduate students through applied hands-on testing of new products and services.
The Convergence Center which was started in 1999 aimed at giving iSchool graduate students an opportunity to work on real convergence projects submitted by various businesses such as Nortel, AT&T and Kodak. The Convergence Center projects focused on the policy and economics practices within these businesses.
CCENT aims at continuing the work of the previous centers and capitalize on the synergy that exists between them to address technology and policy aspects of emerging technology and to engage students, faculty and industry in the process of defining and understanding the impact of emerging technologies.
In the process of our research, we hope to enhance the educational experience of iSchool undergraduate and graduate students through applied hands-on testing of new products and services. Through our testing of new technologies, we have been elaborating and will continue to elaborate instructional material and demonstrations that will enhance the content of several of the courses at the School of Information Studies. Currently, the center hosts 4 test beds for graduate students from both the Information Management Program and the Telecommunication & Network Management program to involve themselves passionately in technology. Additionally, the Center hosts the SU side of the Wireless Grids Innovation Testbed (WiGiT) – part of an NSF funded collaborative project.
Our team of dedicated faculty members guide the students on carrying out various projects. Currently, work at the center takes two forms:
- Research: Faculty and graduate students do basic and applied research on network management problems, changes in industrial organizations and the way users interact with converged products and services. For more information about research, click here.
- Internships: The Center runs an enhanced internship program for graduate students in IT management-related fields. Business organizations bring convergence-related projects to the Center, which assembles a team of two-four graduate students and an experienced faculty member, who come together with their expertise to work for the business.
